CEHD celebrates 150 years of international students at the U of M

The University of Minnesota is celebrating the 150th anniversary of international students on campus. This is an opportunity to reflect on the transformative impact of global engagement on education, research, and service since welcoming the U’s first international student a century and a half ago. Since then, our campus has been shaped by the diverse perspectives, talents, and ideas that international students and scholars bring to our academic community.

Currently, CEHD is home to 301 international students and 45 international faculty and staff members representing over 60 different countries. “Our college fosters a sense of belonging among its international community through many important events,” says International Initiatives and Relations Director Marina Aleixo.

Some of these events include the annual International Thanksgiving, which builds togetherness among international students and their new community; an International Student Graduate Celebration honoring their achievements; and the International Café, which introduces the CEHD community to beverages and refreshments from around the world.

In addition, the International Student Advisory Group, composed of faculty, staff, and students, plays a key role in supporting and advocating for international students. The CEHD International Student Community (CISC), a student organization established in 2022, serves as an important space for students to connect and engage with one another.

“International students, staff, and faculty enrich our CEHD community through service, outreach, and global partnerships,” Aleixo says. “As our society becomes more globalized, their contributions are vital for cross-cultural understanding. As we celebrate this anniversary, we must continue to cultivate inclusive environments and ensure our college remains a leader in education, research, and global service.”

International activities and support

CEHD provides numerous activities and avenues of support for our international community

International initiatives and relations office

In 2007, CEHD’s International Initiatives and Relations office was established by then-Associate Dean Heidi Barajas with the goal of providing strategic leadership on international engagement—a key pillar of the college’s mission. Initially focused on supporting faculty with international research collaborations and partnerships, the office’s role has expanded significantly over the years. Today, it oversees a diverse range of programs, including undergraduate study abroad opportunities, graduate fellowships, visiting scholar programs, faculty and student grants, and a monthly International Speaker Series. More recently, the office has taken on a critical role in providing support for international students.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the growing need for enhanced support for international students, prompting CEHD International Initiatives to take on a more direct role in creating meaningful programming. The office now works closely with international students and various departments and University units, such as the Office of International Students and Scholars Services, to ensure comprehensive support and resources for international students.

International Thanksgiving

The International Thanksgiving dinner has been a cherished tradition at CEHD since 2007, thanks to the vision of Serena Wright, who created the event to help students from around the world experience American culture and build lasting connections. Many international students are far from home during the holiday season, so this event serves as a warm, inclusive space where they can gather, enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal, and feel a sense of belonging. The dinner not only introduces students to iconic dishes like turkey, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie, but it also provides an opportunity to learn about the history and significance of Thanksgiving in the U.S.

Over the years, the event has become a beloved community-building experience, where students from diverse backgrounds can share stories, make new friends, and celebrate the universal themes of gratitude, family, and togetherness.

Gingerbread event

The Gingerbread house-making event is a fun, family-friendly way to introduce international students to an American holiday tradition. In its second year on campus, the event invites students and their children to create gingerbread houses in small groups. It offers a unique opportunity for students to bridge their academic and home life, learn about American holiday customs, and enjoy a festive activity together on campus.

International student graduation

Hosting an international student graduation celebration at our college is a meaningful way to recognize the diverse achievements of students from around the world. This event honors their academic success and highlights the unique challenges they have overcome, such as adapting to a new culture and navigating a different educational system. The event also honors parents that travel long distances to celebrate their child.

Ultimately, such an event enriches the college’s atmosphere, strengthens its global ties, and leaves a lasting impact on both international graduates and their families.

Faculty gathering

In 2024, CEHD hosted its first International Faculty Gathering, at the request of some of our new international faculty members. CEHD currently has 45 international faculty and staff. The gathering provided a valuable opportunity to foster a sense of belonging and create community among faculty members from diverse cultural backgrounds. The event created a welcoming space for faculty and staff to connect, share their experiences, and find solidarity in their common challenges, especially as they adjust to new academic environments and cultural norms.

Academic workshops

Academic workshops targeted at international students are invaluable in helping them successfully navigate the complexities of U.S. higher education. These students often face unique challenges, such as adjusting to different academic cultures, understanding faculty expectations, and mastering the nuances of scholarship and award writing. By offering tailored workshops, our college can provide essential guidance on these topics. Such workshops not only help international students succeed academically but also foster a sense of community and belonging. They can clarify expectations around academic integrity, research methodologies, and professional communication, empowering students to thrive in competitive environments.

International student grants

Recently, CEHD International Initiatives has secured funding to offer Academic Development Awards for international students. These funds enable international students to thrive academically, participate fully in research and campus life, and overcome financial challenges given constraints due to their visa status.

International café

The International Café held during International Education Week in November is a wonderful way to foster cross-cultural exchange and build a sense of community on campus. By bringing together faculty, staff, and students, this event creates a relaxed and inclusive environment where everyone can share their cultural experiences, traditions, and perspectives over a cup of tea. It highlights the college’s commitment to valuing international students and celebrating global diversity.

Through informal conversations, food, and drinks, the café promotes understanding, strengthens connections, and deepens appreciation for the rich culture international students contribute to our college.
